Richard received his MFA from the University of Chicago in 1983 and then showed in Chicago galleries doing performance installations. Sparked by an interest in Chinese culture, he moved to Taiwan and Hong Kong for several years where he also studied Tai Chi Chuan and the Mandarin language.
He spent 12 years in the international printing business and for the last 20 years has been a financial advisor. Throughout this time, he continued to paint and recently returned to incorporating sound into installations, a technique he explored in the 1980s.
“Art is a place to work out ideas and feelings that keep bubbling up in my life. It helps me to understand and accept change. When I start a drawing, I try to have only a vague notion of how it will look when I’m finished. As it takes shape, I make adjustments to the original plan. The adjustments are what make the journey worthwhile.”
