I am a photographer, living in Red Hook, working mostly in Black/White, and prefer to take quiet, contemplative images. . . images that welcome the viewer in to take a long look.
As an analogy of my black and whites, I look for definitive musical lines in a chamber piece. My work in color would be more like listening to full orchestras – although still seeking definitive lines.
My vision is influenced by my background in mathematics and physics. . . not to geometry nor to special effects as such but rather to finding shapes, and curves. A shadow’s edge, from even a straight line, falling onto a curved surface, can take wonderful form.
I print my own work on archival stock, bringing out not only traditional qualities such as contrast and texture, but also, especially, tones.
I also work with Alternative Processes . . . wet-plate collodion, platinum-palladium, and intaglio printing from photographic etchings
The images and writings of many, on photography and philosophy, influence me in subtle directions. . . Stieglitz, Kertész, Barthe, Wesson only begin to enumerate them. I hope viewers hear my message as well.
