Russell is a painter of landscapes and figures with over 25 years’ experience doing commissions, exhibitions and teaching. The sheer versatility of his subjects and methods sets him apart from others. Aside from his smaller oils, his background in mural painting allows him to create larger canvases with a similar amount of refinement. In contrast to the photographic appearance of modern realism, Russell strives for a classic approach, working directly from nature and his imagination. He’s received numerous commissions from designers, architects, celebrities, Senators and private collectors internationally, including the U.S. Capital. He’s been featured on the cover of International Artist magazine and has taught at the Smithsonian and (former) Corcoran (DC). His interest in historical methods prompted a solo exhibit and lecture given by him at the Thomas Cole Museum (NY). His private gallery, studio and school (open by appt.) are located in a historic ‘parsonage’ – a couple of minute’s walk from Main St. in downtown Germantown, NY.
